Signs it is time to replace your mattress
- You wake up stiff, sore or numb, and it eases during the day.
- You sleep better in a hotel or someone else's bed.
- There is a dip or body shape where you lie, or the edges have collapsed.
- Springs creak, poke through or you feel them.
- Tears, lasting stains, smells or signs of bedbugs that won't clear.
- You are tired even after a full night's sleep.
The US Better Sleep Council lists these signs and suggests checking a mattress closely once it reaches about seven years old.[1]
What wears mattresses out faster in Kenya
| Cause | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeping on the floor | Moisture from concrete or earth floors gets into the foam and cover, causing mould and smells. In the 2019 census, 30% of Kenyan households had earth or sand floors and 43.7% had concrete.[2] | Use a bed, a slatted base or at least a raised pallet so air can move underneath. |
| Humid coast and lake towns | Damp air and sweat stay in the foam longer. | Choose spring or hybrid for airflow, use a breathable protector, air the room daily. |
| Weak or widely spaced slats | The mattress sinks between slats and sags early. | Keep slat gaps under about 7 cm, or add a board. See beds and bases. |
| Light foam for an adult | Medium density foam dents under nightly adult use. | Buy high density, orthopedic, spring or hybrid for main bedrooms. |
| Children jumping, sitting on the edge | Breaks down foam and springs at the edges. | Sit in the middle, rotate the mattress regularly. |
| Drying in direct sun for hours | Strong sunlight can break down foam and fade covers. | Air it in shade or indirect light. |
How long each type lasts
How long a mattress lasts depends more on build quality, body weight and care than on type. As a rule, higher density foam, pocket springs and thicker builds (10 to 12 inch) keep their shape longer than medium density foam and thin mattresses. A mattress used nightly by an adult wears faster than one in a guest room.
Make yours last longer
- Rotate it head to foot every three months; flip it too if both sides are the same.
- Use a waterproof protector from day one. See mattress care guide.
- Keep it off the floor and on a firm, even base.
- Choose the right density for daily use: density explained.

Questions
How often should you replace a mattress?
Check it closely once it is about seven years old, and replace it sooner if it sags, causes pain, or smells or has stains you can't clean.
Why is my mattress sagging so fast?
The usual causes are light foam used as an adult's daily bed, weak or widely spaced slats, or the mattress sitting on a damp floor.
Is it bad to put a mattress on the floor?
On concrete or earth floors moisture can collect under it and cause mould. Use a bed, slatted base or raised pallet.
Which mattress type lasts longest?
High density foam, orthopedic, pocket spring and thicker hybrid builds usually hold their shape longest under nightly use.
